The best time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu is during the dry season from May to October, which offers clear blue skies, minimal rain, and sunny days.
This period is ideal for hiking the Inca Trail and sightseeing. The rainy season runs from November to April, bringing lush green landscapes but regular downpours.
- Peak Season (May – October): Excellent visibility, warm days, cold nights. Highly recommended to book 4-6 months in advance.
- Rainy Season (November – April): Fewer travelers, warmer nights, dramatic misty views. Note that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February.
- Shoulder Months (April & November): Great balance of mild weather and lower crowds.
To prevent altitude sickness in Cusco (3,400m / 11,150ft), stay hydrated, avoid strenuous physical activities, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol on your first day.
Drinking native coca tea is also beneficial. We strongly recommend resting and acclimatizing in Cusco or the lower-altitude Sacred Valley for 24 to 48 hours before starting treks.
