Machu Picchu

Sacred Citadel in the Andean Cloud Forest

Photo Gallery:

Destination Overview

Perched dramatically between two emerald peaks in the Peruvian cloud forest, Machu Picchu is one of the world's greatest architectural and engineering marvels. Built in the 15th century under Emperor Pachacuti, this sacred sanctuary served as an elite royal retreat and celestial observatory.

History & Heritage

Constructed at the height of the Inca Empire around 1450 AD, Machu Picchu showcases dry-stone ashlar masonry where massive granite boulders were hand-carved to fit seamlessly without mortar. Abandoned during the Spanish Conquest, the citadel remained hidden from the outside world until 1911, preserving its temples, solar observatories, and terraced agricultural complex intact.
