Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Expedition Route Overview
The Classic Inca Trail is the definitive bucket-list trek of the Americas. Over four unforgettable days, hike ancient hand-carved stone staircases through misty subtropical cloud forests, cross the windswept Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman's Pass at 4,215m), uncover half a dozen dramatic cliffside Inca citadels, and culminate with the awe-inspiring sunrise entrance through the Sun Gate directly overlooking Machu Picchu.
Depart Cusco early through the Sacred Valley to Km 82 (Piscacucho). Cross the Urubamba River checkpoint and begin a gentle hike along the riverbank. Gaze upon the expansive agricultural terraces of Patallacta ruins. Continue alongside the Cusichaca River to our first night's camp in the Andean hamlet of Wayllabamba.
The most demanding yet triumphant day of the trail. Climb steadily through the cloud forest of Llulluchapampa up to the wind-swept Warmihuañusca (Dead Woman's Pass) at 4,215m. Soak in the jaw-dropping 360° vistas of rugged glaciated peaks before descending stone steps into the Pacaymayo Valley camp for hot tea and a chef-cooked dinner.
The most archaeologically rich day. Ascend past the circular watchtower ruins of Runkurakay. Cross the second pass, then explore Sayacmarca ("Inaccessible Town") perched precariously on a cliffside ridge. Walk through an Incan tunnel carved through solid rock into Phuyupatamarca ("City Above the Clouds") before reaching Wiñay Wayna ("Forever Young") with its spectacular curved terraces.
Early morning wake-up call at 4:00 AM. Hike the final trail segment along lush cliffside paths to Inti Punku (The Sun Gate). Arrive as morning sunlight breaks over the Citadel of Machu Picchu — an unforgettable emotional milestone. Descend for a comprehensive 2.5-hour private guided tour of the temples, plazas, and royal chambers. Enjoy lunch in Aguas Calientes before boarding the scenic train and private transfer back to Cusco.
